Hietzing Hospital

Vienna, Austria / 11.2016 - 05.2018

In compliance with strict heritage conservation requirements, PORR carried out a complete refurbishment of Pavilion 1 at Hietzing Hospital, including extensive conversion and extension work. Despite the building’s historic character, PORR’s team of specialists was able to complete the construction project efficiently.

A historic multi-storey building with a white façade and red brick features is connected to a modern, light-coloured extension via a glazed passageway. In the foreground are lawns and trees; in front of the building, a ventilation shaft rises from the ground.

Pavilion 1, Hietzing Hospital in Vienna

To mark the 60th anniversary of Emperor Franz Joseph I’s accession to the throne, the City of Vienna decided in 1907 to build its first municipal hospital, so as not to rely solely on the various charitable and religious hospitals for the provision of medical care to the population. Built between 1908 and 1913 as the Kaiser-Jubiläums-Spital, the hospital, with its ten-hectare park grounds and pavilions organised by speciality, was regarded as a forward-looking, international showcase project. At the end of the First World War, the hospital was renamed “Krankenhaus Lainz”; today, the healthcare facility is known as Krankenhaus Hietzing with the Rosenhügel Neurological Centre.

As part of the comprehensive refurbishment of Pavilion 1, PORR carried out extensive conversion and extension work in Hietzing in compliance with strict heritage protection requirements. The pavilion, with a gross floor area of 14,900 m² and a capacity of 140 beds, was transformed into a modern healthcare facility in accordance with current norms and standards, primarily housing the clinical department of psychiatry.

In healthcare facilities in particular, commissioning, trial runs, acceptance tests, training and, ultimately, handover to the operators are extremely demanding and must meet the highest quality criteria. PORR fulfilled all these tasks to the client’s complete satisfaction, enabling Pavilion 1 to be handed over and go into operation on schedule in May 2018.

On this project, PORR, as the main contractor, was able to impress not only with its numerous references in the healthcare sector, but also with its expertise in listed buildings. In addition, PORR contributed numerous ideas and suggestions which, whilst keeping costs constant and adhering to the budget, enabled the fulfilment of one or two of the client’s special requests.
